Haven’t been here in at least a year.  Today we had snow in Alabama.  Schools are closed for 2 days.  Was to teach in Perspectives on the Kingdom of God but the class was canceled.  David Wells has a good article on Luke 18:1-8 and the Lord’s Prayer.  Thy Kingdom Come is a prayer against the status quo.  We need the persistence of the widow, but it comes from seeing how God wants to answer how he wants us to pray in the Kingdom, to wrestle with flesh and blood.

The New Year 2013.  Yesterday I read IMPACT PLAYER by Bobby Richardson.  That stirred up memories when I was 9 years old and watched the world Series.  From deep in my memory I remember hearing or seeing the account of the ground ball that hit Tony Kubek in the throat and he was taken out.  Then the heart break when the Yankees lost 10-9.  I first watched the Yankees in 1960 when they played the Washington Senators.  I wrote him a letter and will mail it tomorrow.  Called Flo Mabe who knows him and got his street address. May I focus on the Lord in 2013.

counsel from friends

we were at dinner with two friends who have raised 3 children and talking about how to help our son.  We need to establish boundaries but show there are consequences.  We need the Lord’s wisdom.  Grades I heard were not good.   How do you show tough love as well as unconditional love like the FAther in Luke 15?  Lord open his eyes as you did mine some 40 years ago.  Show him the purpose you have for him.  Show us how to pray.  Lord he is your gift to us and he is yours.  May you overrule my faults in being a father.  Friends had counsel as to the internet and our wireless network.  Help the two of us to be on the same page.  And show us how to combat the Enemy!

Reflections from Detroit and book by Franky Schaeffer

Was at Kirk of the Savior in suburb of Detroit Oct 21. It was founded in 1960 on Cherry Hill road. About 60 in worship and 7 blocks from an islamic center. a few were asking good questions about how to share their faith. On the way back picked up a book at Fran’s by Franky Schaeffer called Crazy for God. I spent 3 months at l’Abri in 1979 but the Schaeffers were off promoting the film series “Whatever happened to the Human Race” The book is very critical of his parents and other Christian leaders, but does hold up how L’abri was open to all. We are all marred people, tainted by sin. Their writings, Edith’s on L’Abri helped me get into Fran’s more heavier works, helped me immensely and I loved the community ( but for family troubles at home in the USA I almost put down roots there) and I appreciated Priscilla and John Sandri. Other than a real personal interest in the Schaeffer’s and L’Abri I don’t recommend the book.
But it does show Franky’s view and faults of his parents. We hold this treasure of the Gospel in clay pots!!!

I am learning t…

I am learning things the hard way.  We have a loan with deferred interest on our roof and windows.  Just realized if we don’t pay it off, almost $5000 of interest will go on our account.  So it is leading me to seek refinancing.  We have made some dumb choices. But that dumb choice led to this realization. Romans 8:28. Reading Numbers this morning, reminds me.  Only after a year they wanted to go back to Egypt.  they had seen the Red Sea part, the 10 plagues that delivered them, yet would not trust and obey the Lord through Moses.

I didn’t see Clint Eastwood and the chair at the Republican convention but many have commented on it. So I searched and here it is. It is rambling, a little disjointed. In some ways he tackles all politicians, but it is our country and we all have a responsibility to pray and to vote and to

seek the Kingdom of God. Many have died before us for the right to elect our leaders, for us to have the freedom of the vote. So as Michelle said last night: vote. The issues before this country are not easy. In some ways Obama is right, we didn’t build it. Everything we have received is a gift. The Constitution is a gift. Our inalienable rights are a gift. But we are to build on the foundation others have laid for us. But it is the freedom of opportunity. The Psalmist says “Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord.” Both parties forget that. I recommend “When Helping Hurts”. Early in the book it hit me to repent and say God forgive us. A century ago the social gospel/evangelical debate caused the evangelical wing to abandon the church’s role in social justice ie Luke 4. And where the church stepped out, the government stepped in. There was a false dichotomy which led many of us to abandon the public sphere. Luke 4 and John 3 need to be held together. And in II Chron 7:14 we are called to repent, to turn from our wicked ways. It also begins with humility to acknowledge our complacency, whatever and the promise is that God will heal our land and forgive our sin. Peter said judgment begins at the house of the Lord. God help us to be salt and light. And as Clint closed
“Make My Day”.

Back porch

My Dad was good at fixing things but I didn’t learn much from him.  I replaced some lattice on the back porch as we have new renters coming in two weeks.  So trying to get the duplex ready.  That was some sense of accomplishment.  Now to clean up the mildew on the back steps.  Then I had to straighten out our phones.  I hate contracts.  Had gotten Cody another phone thinking it wouldn’t add anything but my bill went up $30  month and then it was too late to turn in the phone.  And when we had gotten it, ATT put a block on all our phones. Now I know why I couldn’t download APPS and use the ones I had.  Dealing with these kind of things pales with those who have flee for their lives because of trusting in jesus.  Just got an email from Ala who had to leave sudan and was being held in immigration detention.  He is now free, but must still report.  Since I have this blog i wanted to add something to it.
